Tax inspectors are set to strike for the first time in more than two decades after the senior civil service union balloted members over changes to pension schemes.

The FDA union, which also represents senior civil servants, government lawyers and crown prosecutors, will join other public sector unions to strike on 23 March after 68% of members voted for action in a 52% turnout. Unlike other unions, however, FDA member will only be on strike for the morning.

FDA secretary Johnathan Baume said the vote ‘should send a strong message to government that even its own managers consider the new pension plans to be unacceptable and bad for the civil service’.
