Richard Murphy, Founder, Tax Research UK

Murphy is an impressive combination of chartered accountant, political economist, university professor, and anti-poverty campaigner

Bio

Murphy is the Founder and Director of Tax Research UK. He is also a chartered accountant as well as a political economist. The Guardian described him as an “anti-poverty campaigner and tax expert”. As well as this, he is Professor of Practice in International Political Economy at City University in London and a non-executive director of Cambridge Econometrics.

Since 2003, Murphy has been increasingly involved in economic and taxation policy issues. This led him to become founder of the Tax Justice Network and director of Tax Research LLP, which undertakes work on taxation policy, advocacy, and research for aid agencies, unions, NGOs, and others in the UK and abroad.

Murphy’s work for the TUC, PCS, and others on the tax gap in the UK has put this issue firmly on the UK tax agenda. It specifically came into taxation debate when the TUC published his report, ‘The Missing Billions’ in 2008.

He has written widely on blogs, appeared on radio and television documentaries on taxation issues, and written multiple books on tax and the economy.

Why did he make the power list?

Murphy is number 41 on the Accountancy Age Financial Power List 2018. With tax evasion and tax avoidance ever-present as major discussion topics in 2018, tax campaigner Murphy’s take views on tax inequality and the impact on the UK will be welcomed by many in the industry. As Brexit negotiations continue with the March 2019 deadline speedily approaching, Murphy will remain an important voice in an uncertain, and often unfair, environment.

Tax Research UK

Murphy is co-founder of the Tax Justice Network, which is an advocacy group comprised on coalition researchers and activits with a shared concern about tax avoidance, tax competition, and tax havens.

He is also director of Tax Research LLP. Due to the fact it is a Limited Liability Partnership, Murphy is technically a member rather than a director, and Mrs Jacqueline Murphy is the only other member.
