Who does the City want as chancellor?
Who is the most popular candidate for the chancellor’s chair among City people? Yesterday a poll in newspaper City AM said Kenneth Clarke was more popular than George Osborne. Which is interesting because Osborne more or less disappeared from view after the first chancellors’ debate. Yesterday’s debate on the BBC saw the Tory No 11 pretender return to the public eye.
But an article in this morning’s Financial Times from the Tory party is interesting. It’s topic is the horrors of a hung parliament and is presumably aimed at convincing financial high-flyers in the City why such an outcome would result in “continued economic crisis”. And the author? Surely it should be the man who would be running the economy under a Tory government? Er, apparently not. The author is Ken Clarke. I leave you to judge why.
