Former EU whistleblower Marta Andreasen said she will take aim at agricultural policy when she takes her seat in the European Parliament representing the UK Independence Party
The newly-elected MEP and former EU chief accountant was suspended in 2002
after exposing ‘serious and glaring’ irregularities in the organisation’s
accounting methods. She won the Accountancy Age Personality of the Year
Award in 2003, but was eventually sacked from her post.
She will return as a parliamentarian and will scrutinise recipients of
agricultural subsidies. ‘We are paying the wrong amounts to the wrong people for
the wrong purpose,’ she said.
‘I am not going to rely on the auditor’s report, but ask myself whether all
the beneficiaries are qualified to be beneficiaries.’ Andreasen said she sees
her election as a continuation of the fight she began seven years ago.
