Internal Revenue Service makes records from famous Al Capone tax evasion case available
The records of one of the most famous tax evasion cases ever, involving
iconic Chicago gangster Al Capone, have been released by the IRS 77 years after
the prosecution.
WebCPA reports that in 1931 the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s Intelligence
Unit completed an investigation that led to Capone’s conviction for tax evasion
and an eleven-year gaol sentence.
The IRS has now unearthed the documents from the three-year investigation led
by special agent Frank Wilson following a freedom of information request.
The IRS had to decide whether the documents could be released, as it is
subject to confidentiality obligations.
It finally decided it could make the information public as Capone never filed
a tax return.
