McCracken was formerly head of tax of now-defunct firm Arthur Andersen, and was more recently based in Edinburgh with Deloitte, the FT reported.
He will join GT’s Edinburgh office, working with its Scottish head of tax, Michael McCusker, with a view to expanding the firm’s services offered to clients.
McCracken has more than 20 years experience of business taxation and said he was ‘very happy to be coming to Grant Thornton’.
Grant Thornton managing partner Andrew Godfrey said McCracken would be a considerable boost to the firm’s tax advisory services in Scotland.
‘Grant Thornton is committed to investing in Scotland and where we have the opportunity to attract high quality professionals such as George, we will continue to put the service of our client base at the forefront of our activities,’ Godfrey added.
