The CIPFA Council, the Institute’s governing body, has agreed to recommend mandatory training and hopes to reach a decision at the annual general meeting in Harrogate on 12 June.
CIPFA has stated the move aims to restore public confidence in the profession in response to concerns about confidence in the industry following scandals such as Enron and Worldcom.
‘We have been moving in the direction of mandatory CPD for some time. The world is changing ever more rapidly and public expectations of accountants are becoming increasingly demanding. By introducing our new scheme on a mandatory basis we can evidence this commitment in the most practical, tangible way,’ said Roger Tabor, president of CIPFA.
