The Tory party yesterday pledged to open the BBC’s accounts to a full audit
by the National Audit office, a measure the broadcaster has steadfastly opposed.
The promise comes on the back of recent heavy criticism of the BBC by the
Conservative chairman of the Commons Public Accounts Committee Edward Leigh.
In comments on the sums offered to top stars by the BBC, Leigh, who steps
down from the chairmanship at this election, said the BBC did not always have ”
value for money” and cost-effectiveness “foremost” in its thinking.
Recently the BBC indicated it was happy to have the NAO as auditor if it
tendered for the role when the current contract was up in 2012. However, it
added the caveat that the auditor have to report directly to BBC trustees first.
