Human rights watchdog wins first clean audit opinion
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has been given its first ever unqualified audit opinion
FOR THE FIRST time since its inception in 2007, the Equality and Human Rights Commission has won a clean audit opinion on its accounts.
The Comptroller and Auditor General said it had seen “significant improvements” in the accounts, which last year had written off losses without appropriate approval and incurred irregular expenditure, among other shortcomings.
Head of the National Audit Office Amyas Morse, said: “It is welcome that, as a result of improvements finally starting to take effect, I have been able to issue the first unqualified audit opinion on the accounts of EHRC since it was established in 2007. However, these are just the first steps and I have outlined a number of areas where EHRC needs to improve further.”
The C&AG expressed concern that many of the improvements had been delivered by interim staff and warned the commission’s culture around financial and administrative controls must be beyond reproach.
