The taxman’s top civil servant has apologised for the PAYE gaffes, after
initially refusing to say sorry for the errors which have affected six million
workers.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Dave Hartnett originally refused to apologise, but
backtracked on his decision later that day, declaring he was deeply sorry for
the blunder.
Hartnett’s apology came in the wake of government figures understood to be
unhappy with the Radio 4 interview.
“I am deeply sorry that people are facing an unexpected tax bill,” Hartnett
said in a statement.
“Everyone in HMRC is working hard to make this as painless as possible. I
apologise if my remarks came across as insensitive.”
