Division two manager guilty of tax evasion
Steve
Evans, the current manager of second division club
Boston United will keep his job at the club
despite being found guilty of fraudulent evasion of income tax and national
insurance contributions.
Evans, of The Cloisters, Eye, near Peterborough, and the club’s former
chairman Pat Malkinson, of Spilsby Road, Boston, pleaded guilty to cheating the
public revenue between 1997 and 2002.
Their combined fraudulent evasion of taxes amounted to £245,000.
Evans was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.
Malkinson was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment suspended for two years.
HMRC said the fraud involved disguising
salaries and wages as untaxed expenses and the submission of false end of year
tax returns. As a result, the club was able to pay players and managers higher
wages, securing a competitive advantage over rival clubs.
