‘The UN, like many of its individual
member states, has grown corporate governance arrangements over time on an
ad-hoc basis. It now lags behind best international practice,’ said Andrew
Likierman, the former head of UK government accounting and Barclays non-exec. He
urged the international body to make the move last week at a meeting of the UN’s
finance committee.
Likierman has recommended the immediate establishment of an Independent Audit
Advisory Committee, the abolition of the Joint Inspection Unit, and a
‘results-based’ approach to future governance.
The General Assembly
has decided in principle to set up the committee and will now formally decide
whether to adopt Likierman’s recommendations.
