HMRC chairman David Varney rewarded for work on merger
David Varney, the HMRC chairman who has overseen the merger of the UK’s two
tax collecting departments over the last year, has been knighted in the Queen’s
New Year honours list.
Varney is the merged body’s first chairman and has overseen the continuing
integration of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise during the past 12
months, at a time when it revealed record receipts from taxes, duties and other
revenue of £379bn for 2004/2005.
Announcing the receipts, Varney said the department had made ‘great strides’
in its first six months, ‘underpinned by the hard work and commitment of staff
during a period of unprecedented change for the department’.
