Fewer than one in five said they backed a rise in tax in next week’s Budget to pay for the coalition’s actions in Iraq and any post-conflict support.
Gordon Brown has already pledged £3bn to the cause and said that the UK would spend ‘whatever it takes’ to see out the war, but the results show that he and the Labour party could face a backlash if UK plc has to pay out of its own pocket. Brown’s Budget is already expected to show slowing economic growth without the effects of war, which could impact on spending plans.
