Replying to a question from Liberal Democrat MP Steve Webb, she said this compared with a peak of 300 cases in 2000 among the Inland Revenue’s 70,000 employees.

The number of potential cases at Customs and Excise soared to 101 out of 20,000 staff, but only 4 related to access to data, she said.

Kelly’s comments come after the Inland Revenue admitted earlier this month that members of its staff have been illegally selling confidential details of tax records to external organisations.
