Van Buitenen blows whistle again
EU whistleblower given eight weeks' grace to compile report on concerns over mismanagement.
The European Commission and the European Union anti-fraud office OLAF is once again deciding how to handle weighty allegations about professional wrongdoing in Brussels by EU whistleblower par excellence Paul van Buitenen.
Unlike the first occasion that Mr van Buitenen, a former winner of Accountancy Age’s personality of the year award, made claims about fraud and mismanagement, (he was suspended), the Dutch official has been given eight weeks’ grace from regular duties and a special office and equipment to compile his brief.
This, plus 5,000 pages of annexes, has now been analysed by OLAF and Brussels’ directorate general for administration.
The officials met late last month to decide how to follow up Mr van Buitenen’s concerns. A decision is awaited.
