The recent publication of the 16th edition of the Personnel Manager's Yearbook reflects the changes affecting business as mergers and acquisitions increase, as well as reflecting the technological advance in major companies and suppliers. The 2000/2001 edition, published by AP Information Services, contains a foreword by David Blunkett, in which he speaks about new technologies making learning more attractive. He also highlights the ICT learning centres, which should help build skills in local labour markets.

It has been revealed that nearly 50 percent of small and medium sized businesses in the UK believe the Internet and IT to have had no effect on their business. The survey, carried out on behalf of Inaltus, also highlights a lack of understanding of SMEs by IT vendors and solution providers. This apparently goes both ways as 49 percent of SMEs believe the Internet and IT market has not taken off due to businesses being unaware of how to use the technology.

Sema Group has announced its new Business Recovery Centre in London’s Docklands. This is its 15th site in the UK, containing 600 disaster recovery positions and should enable a customer’s employees to instantly relocate to these premises and resume its business.

Members of the MCA have reported revenues of £949m for the second quarter of 2000, a 35 percent rise over comparable figures in 1999, putting revenues for 2000 in excess of £4bn. Although IT consulting revenues remained flat, traditional consultancy areas such as strategy, change management and HR saw strong growth, with e-business again regarded as the driver for the industry.

Half of all telecoms managers in the UK’s top companies cannot do their jobs effectively due to the time it takes to analyse charges, according to independent research commissioned by Seagate Technology. It also found that the complexity of analysis is compounded by firms having an average of three telecoms managers.
