The UK is making 'good progress' as it attempts to become the best place in the world to trade electronically, according to the government's first e-envoy Alex Allan.
In his first public appearance, Allan set out the achievements made since the Prime Minister unveiled plans to promote e-commerce in the UK last September.
Speaking at the Internet Services Providers Association Parliamentary Advisory Forum, Allan also highlighted a surge in online retailing, success in reducing the cost of internet access and a rise in awareness in e-commerce.
‘The UK now tops the European e-commerce league. A recent survey showed more companies have their own web-sites and use the Internet for e-commerce than in any other European country and UK executives make more use of e-mail,’ said Allan.
Meanwhile, he also launched e-forum – an online process of continuous consultation with the public and business.
