Peter Gabriel wields tax sledgehammer
Lawyers for Peter Gabriel have issued a writ against Baker Tilly for alleged breach of contract and duty of care over its handling of the singer and record producer’s taxes.
Although the sum Gabriel is seeking is not known, the period in question covered the release of his successful ‘Us’ album and ‘Secret World’ tour worth many millions.
The writ relates to dealings in Gabriel’s tax affairs from 5 April 1992 to 1993, as well as his private company between 31 December 1992 and 31 December 1993. If the writ is successful it could dent Baker Tilly’s strong reputation for work in media and the arts.
A spokesman for Sheridans solicitors confirmed the firm had issued the writ on behalf of Gabriel earlier this month but declined to offer further details. Baker Tilly refused to comment.
Gabriel is not the first pop star to take action against his advisers.
Keith Moore, the accountant of ex-Police lead singer Sting, was jailed in October 1995 for stealing #6m from the musician, while Depeche Mode keyboard player Andrew Fletcher last month negotiated a settlement with Levy Gee over the firm’s handling of his investments in Lloyd’s of London.
