Mixed Tax Manager

Purpose of the Role:

To provide tax compliance and advisory services in support of the Tax Director / Tax Partner, maximising fee income and generating new client and consultancy work from a portfolio. Management of the tax compliance function and staff, ensuring efficient production and quality levels are met.

Main Responsibilities


  • Assist in delivering the firm’s tax strategy
  • Spot opportunities with clients
  • Generate new leads and win new tax advisory work

Portfolio management:

  • Provide tax advisory services on client portfolios, maximising fee earning opportunities
  • Manage the production of corporate and personal tax computations
  • Plan, control and review work carried out by team members to ensure work is completed within timeframes and budget
  • Respond to tax queries from Partners & Directors


  • Carry out consultancy work
  • Carry out advisory work
  • Liaise between Partners, tax department and audit department
  • Attend client meetings and presentations (where appropriate)
  • Correspondence with clients and external agencies

Staff management (where appropriate):

  • Assist in completing appraisals for all allocated members of staff ensuring that these are completed February and August to enable staff to be developed and in turn enhance their effectiveness
  • Allocate and review jobs / tasks
  • Ensure trainees receive training relevant to their level of ability
  • Actively promote regular use of the Tax section on the Intranet
  • Actively involve junior staff in advisory work


  • Partners - how jobs are progressing, keeping them informed on client matters, proposed strategies on dealing with clients, signing off jobs and discussing what to bill clients
  • Audit managers – technical advice
  • Tax Director / Tax Managers / Tax Development Manager
  • Tax team members
  • Admin team – any administration, marketing, secretarial duties
  • Clients – meetings, ad hoc queries
  • HMRC

Decision Making Parameters

  • Allocation of portfolio
  • Setting budget/fee level for existing clients
  • Decisions on technical advice

Qualification and Skills

  • CTA (minimum 3-5 years post qualification experience)
  • Current technical knowledge
  • Generalist experience including both corporate and personal tax in an OMB environment
  • Large compliance and advisory experience
