Navy Command Headquarters (NCHQ) in Whale Island, Portsmouth, is the nerve centre of the Naval Service. It supports operations around the globe and provides the ships, people, aircraft and equipment to deliver the UK’s defence policy. The NCHQ supports all the Royal Navy’s activities from front-line operations to personnel support and training; finance and governance; safety; equipment acquisition; programmes and planning; and Defence Engagement. Civil Servants and Armed Forces personnel work together in a wealth of interesting and challenging jobs in different disciplines, from finance; legal services; personnel and HR; project planning and managing contracts, to media and communications.
The Financial Accountant is responsible for a team of 2, providing support to the Financial Accounting Manager and is an integral part of the central finance team. The role provides an interface between the individual finance teams within Navy Command and external bodies such as MOD Centre, Auditors and colleagues in other commands. A key responsibility of the role is the production of Navy’s input to the MOD annual accounts and management of the National Audit Office’s annual audit cycle. The role is also the Navy focal point for Losses and Special Payments reporting, and VAT.
There is a key requirement to have a good understanding of financial accounting standards along with the ability to interpret policy and issue related guidance. Good communication skills and the ability to accurately present and interpret complex financial data are essential, as is the requirement to be IT literate in Microsoft applications. Previous experience of financial and management accounting, including the operation of accounting packages, is essential.
CCAB or equivalent qualified accountant or passed finalised, and a current member of the respective accounting body.
