Shelter is looking for a qualified accountant with an outstanding track record of leading a finance function to join us as Director of Finance & Resources and take on a leadership role that will have a real impact across the organisation.
Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
Employing over 1,250 staff and with a network of more than 1,500 volunteers, Shelter England provides an array of services aimed at tackling bad housing and homelessness. We offer free, expert housing advice to anyone – no matter what their situation - and have a free helpline that’s open 365 days a year. We also have face-to-face advice centres up and down the country, as well as specialist support services that help families in housing need. Add in the fact that we have an ambitious new strategy to implement and it's fair to say that the challenge of leading our finances and resources directorate is a huge one. Are you ready to tackle it?
About the role
Delivering effective strategic financial management in support of a new three-year strategy is just one aspect of this high-profile role. Providing effective leadership of an IT programme that’s core to the delivery of Shelter’s objectives is another. We’ll also rely on you to manage our Property Team, support the development of our retail chain and work with teams in England and Scotland to deliver strategic property management services for our Advice and Support services. Assuming the role of Company Secretary and statutory director of Shelter Trading Ltd. comes with the territory too, as does working with Senior Leadership Team colleagues to own and drive our strategic direction. In short, you’ll be key to helping to create a strong and sustainable future for Shelter while at the same time seeking ways to maximise efficiency and manage financial risk.
A qualified accountant (ideally ACA) from the corporate, public or not-for-profit sector, your impressive career-to-date has ideally given you an appreciation of IT and Property issues as well as Finance. You’ll definitely need broad experience of developing systems, process and policies and managing their implementation around programmes of improvement, efficiency and change. A clear thinker and first-class communicator, managing complex senior relationships comes naturally to you, as does motivating the people you lead. What’s more, you're excited about joining an organisation that’s ready to implement an ambitious new strategy and have the drive and determination to help us achieve our aims.
Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, the possibility of flexible working, enhanced family friendly policies and significant opportunities for learning and development.
