I am currently working with a well known SME business in West Kent who are recruiting for a Financial Controller.

Client Details

My client are an SME business with ambitious plans for their future. They have a unique office culture and would suit a financial controller who is highly talented and engaging.


  • Ensure day-to-day finance tasks are undertaken in an accurate, timely and efficient manner

  • Prepare management information reports to agreed deadlines

  • Assist with the preparation and audit of year-end financial statements and liaise with the Group's external accountants

  • Manage cash flow, to include budgeting and forecasting, and liaising closely with relevant business teams to understand and control forward expenditure

  • Liaise with sources of commercial finance

  • Supervise purchase and sales ledgers

  • Carry out bank account reconciliations

  • Manage payroll (internal or external)

  • Liaise with HMRC as required

  • Manage and reimburse staff expenses

  • Carry out ad hoc project work, providing finance support direct to the board of directors

  • Manage junior members of the finance team, supervising them in their work, and mentoring, coaching and guiding them to be the best they can be

  • Carry out the full performance review process with direct reports

  • Carry out one to ones with direct reports, giving praise and recognition as well as honest, fair, constructive and timely feedback


  • Qualified accountant (ACCA/CIMA/ACA)

  • Excellent information technology awareness, including expertise in Microsoft Excel and Google spreadsheets and in electronic accounting packages

  • Experience of start-up businesses which are growing rapidly

  • Strong people management experience, especially of junior team members

  • Experience of working in a team to tight deadlines

  • Knowledge of VAT and Tax, preferably with experience of completing VAT returns

  • First-hand experience of HMRC excise duty management and control systems would be an advantage

  • Ability to understand and engage with complex topics

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Team player, used to working flexibly with colleagues and the ability to work independently

  • Ability to prioritise, plan and organise effectively to meet tight deadlines
