Keep gloom at bay

We reveal this week that consultant Accenture is recruiting 500 new heads in 2002 as the Big Five – a club of which, as Andersen Consulting, it was counted as a member until its recent name change – lays off people and cuts recruitment.

It’s a comparatively rare piece of good news in what can seem like a sea of bad.

But retaining a sense of perspective is vital. Last week’s Big Question survey revealed a majority of UK finance directors believe the domestic economy will escape recession this year.

With all the talk of economic doom amid corporate gloom it’s easy to forget that this slowdown is different to others we have experienced.

It’s one driven by sector and by geography. We all need to take care to ensure it’s not spread by negative sentiment.
