The new VAT rate may hit the most vulnerable, according to an action group
which has warned about the impact on disabled people.
The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group wants a review of existing tax relief for
disabled people, to avoid confusion and anguish once the new tax rate takes
effect.
Chancellor George Osborne announced an increase in VAT to 20% in his budget
speech yesterday.
LITRG’s Technical Director, Robin Williamson, said the current model lacks
“coherence and logic”.
“The increase in the VAT standard rate, without a balancing extension of
reliefs or reduced rates, will make life yet more difficult for people with
disabilities,” he said.
