Revenue and Customs to take brunt of job cuts

Chancellor Gordon Brown has confirmed that 8,000 of the 14,000 Whitehall job reductions forecast in his Budget statement by 2007-08 will be made by the Inland Revenue with 3,000 to be trimmed from Customs and Excise.

Replying to questions in the Commons he said 3,000 of these would result from the merger of the two revenue departments.

Altogether 54,000 posts are to go across government, resulting in 40,000 fewer civil servants than there were in 1997-98, when Brown became chancellor.
