Paul Clarke has taken over the position of senior partner in the Belfast office of Deloitte & Touche. He takes on complete responsibility for the Northern Ireland practice while remaining in charge of the regional consulting practice in Scotland and Northern Ireland. He began his career in the Northern Ireland Audit office and PriceWaterhouse before joining Deloittes in 1993. He became a partner in 1997. Married with two children, he is a fanatical fly fisherman and a reluctant golfer.

– BDO Stoy Hayward has appointed a new partner. Sue Moore has joined the partnership as head of the private client group in the East Midlands. Moore has been involved in the rapid development of the group and sees the increasing need for hands-on treatment for the personal affairs of many wealthy individuals. She is married with three children and lives in Leicestershire.

– BDO Stoy Hayward Corporate Finance has appointed David Redman, from PricewaterhouseCoopers, to work as a corporate finance executive. The firm has also promoted Paul Anthony to lead the expanding audit & business services department as its senior manager. Anthony, a graduate from Portsmouth university, joined the firm in 1999 from another national accountancy firm. He has also pursued his interest in training by establishing a new training programme for the firm’s graduate trainees.

– Kent-based firm Smith & Hunter has appointed Beverley Aitken as tax partner. Directly involved in tax throughout her career, she is a specialist in trusts, capital gains and inheritance tax. Her appointment reflects the increasing importance of tax consultancy and planning within the practice.

– Hall Livesey Brown, based in Tarporley in Cheshire, has announced the appointment of a new partner. From April, Simon Jeffrey will be joining the team of four partners. He started with the firm in 1994 as an accounts clerk. By 1997 he had successfully qualified as a chartered accountant with some of the highest marks in Chester and North Wales.

– Heather Powell and John Coverdale have been appointed partners in MGI Midgley Snelling. Powell started her career at the London office of Peat Marwick Mitchell, now merged into KPMG, following her graduation from Cambridge University, and joined MGI Midgley Snelling in April 1997.

The firm is also pleased to welcome John Coverdale back to the firm as a partner. He originally joined in 1987 and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1990. The firm has offices in central London and Weybridge, Surrey.

It is a founder member of MGI, a worldwide association of independent auditing, accounting and consulting firms, with over 200 offices in nearly 70 countries.

– Geoffrey Rowley, a senior manager in PKF’s corporate recovery division, has been made partner at the age of 29, making him the youngest partner in the firm. Rowley joined PKF in 1997 and specialises in banking services.

– Harris Lipman has scooped the prize for the best two-to-four partner practice in the RAN ONE Awards and a WOW Award for excellent service.

RAN ONE is an organisation of 3,000 accountancy firms worldwide with 300 members in the UK. The RAN ONE award, sponsored by Barclays Bank and Einstein Network, was for enterprise, innovation, profit improvement and expansion.

The WOW Award is given for outstanding service, and is chosen from all entrants to the RAN ONE scheme. Harris Lipman is in good company as previous winners of this prestigious award include such high-profile names as the food chain Pret a Manger. The WOW Awards are non-profit making and aims to raise standards of customer-service throughout the UK.

– London-based accountancy firm Berg Kaprow Lewis has been named by the Added Value Network as the top large accountancy firm of the year.

The firm received the award in recognition for the innovative work done by its unit for growing businesses.

– Steve Gale has been appointed a partner at Horwath Clark Whitehill.

Gale was previously senior manager within HCW’s accounting and audit technical department.

He joined the firm in 1989, qualifying in 1992. Gale is also writing a business digest on limited liability partnerships and will be lecturing on the accounting issues facing LLPs at a number of external seminars.

– Andrew Booth, Alan Becker and Tom Gallop have all been promoted to management roles at Price Bailey‘s Cambridge office. Booth and Becker joined the firm straight from school and have completed their chartered certified accountancy qualifications with the firm. Booth specialises in general practice, while Becker is a Sage software specialist. Gallop, a second-career accountant, having previously worked in teaching, joined Price Bailey in 1997. He now specialises in business development and corporate finance.

– Grant Thornton has appointed Sacha Romanovitch to partner to its audit and business advisory team for smaller quoted companies in London and the South East.

She qualified in 1993 and joined its Thames Valley office in June 1994. She was a judge on BTI Export Awards for smaller businesses in 1999 and 2000 and contributes articles to the trade press in her specialist sectors.

In her spare time she is also a qualified yoga teacher having studied in India during a sabbatical earlier in her career.

– The Manchester office of Hacker Young has appointed a new tax partner.

Clive Gawthorpe joined the firm after spending six years in a similar role at another Bolton-based firm. Outside the office, the Lancashire family man has two daughters to occupy his attention and enjoys playing both squash and golf.

– Mike Broadhead has been appointed to finance director of car components specialist Aftermarket UK. He will have a double reporting relationship both with his managing director and the European finance director. Aftermarket is a division of Federal-Mogul, which Broadhead joined in August 2000 as assistant controller. Prior to his time with the company he held several senior finance positions including European controller for J. Case Europe, finance director of Leisure Industries and, most recently, finance director for a pharmaceutical company.

– Ogilvy Group UK, which specialises in marketing and communications, has appointed Mike Iles as chief financial officer. He takes on the new role in addition to his current responsibilities as finance director and management partner for operations at OgilvyOne, which specialises in one-to-one communications. He joined the company in 1987 from Price Waterhouse where he worked as an accountant in London and Bermuda. In his first role at Ogilvy, Iles spent three years as finance director of worldwide client services, working with multinational client finances.

– The council of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) has appointed Baker Tilly tax specialist Colin Sharp as chairman of its 7,500 world wide members in 60 countries. Sharp’s main role will be to promote the organisation as the premier education and lobbying body for trust and estate practitioners globally. Sharp is also the chairman of Baker Tilly’s Trust Group.
