Vote against rebels, says ICAEW head

The new president of the ICAEW used his flagship address at the institute's annual conference this week to urge members to vote against rebels who are attempting to block changes to its regional network.

Micheal Groom, a consultant and former sole practitioner, succeeded PricewaterhouseCoopers partner as institute president last week, and has chosen enterprise as the theme of his tenure.

He said: ‘My experience over thirty years as a chartered accountant advising businesses has consistently demonstrated to me the central role that our profession plays in successful entrepreneurship.

‘Enterprise is the blood which flows through our corporate veins.’

Groom has set out a ten-point programme designed to highlight the contribution of accountants as key drivers of enterprise.

But he also issued a plea to delegates at London’s Queen Elizabeth II conference hall to vote against a group of members who have forced an emergency general meeting, due to take place on 11 July, over plans to revamp the institute’s district society network.

Emphasising the support for the plans and the potential £100,000 cost of the meeting, he said: ‘I urge all the members here, and those you are able to influence, to reject this resolution.’

His words follow an admission at an institute council meeting last week that it had no contingency plans to deal with losing to the rebels at next month’s egm.Groom also used his opening speech at the conference highlight a joint initiative with the Association of Accounting Technicians which has developed a new AAT to ACA progression route which was launched last week.
