Clarke’s appointment follows the move of former FD Peter Williams to the position of chief executive at Selfridges.
Before joining Selfridges in 1997, Clarke, a qualified management accountant, was employed at US parent company Sears.
At Selfridges he worked at financial controller before becoming commercial controller, and prior to joining Sears in 1990 he held numerous finance positions at other quoted UK companies.
Selfridges’ chairman Alun Cathcart, said: ‘I am delighted that the Board has appointed Phil as successor to Peter Williams as finance director.
‘Phil is the ideal candidate, having made an enormous contribution as a core member of the successful Selfridges management team over the past five years.’
He will take on the role from 1 February 2003.
