Tax lobby group slammed for charity arm's tax relief
Taxpayers Alliance, questioned over its links to the Tory Party - is criticised for having a charitable arm that can claim back tax relief on donations
A lobby group that sticks up for the rights of ordinary taxpayers uses tax
relief on donations through a charity arm.
Alliance operates a charity under the name Politics and Economics
Research Trust through which donations have been made, benefiting from up to 40%
in subsidies from the taxman, reports
Politicians and advisers criticised the arrangement, warning that
organisations cannot be charitable if they have political purposes. The
Guardian has also claimed it is a front organsation for the Conservatives.
David Wall, secretary of the Midlands Industrial Council which has donated to
both the alliance and the charity, said that specific project funding was made
through the charity.
