Brown keeps Budget day options open

Chancellor Gordon Brown is still keeping open the date of Budget Day - amidst a widespread belief he wants to see if the Gulf crisis will end in war with Iraq - with the possibility it could be as late as April or even May.

Commons Leader Robin Cook, challenged over the delay fixing a date, would go no further than insist that ‘it is early days’ and affirm: ‘The Budget normally takes place in the Spring, and I have no reason to believe it will be any different this year.’

Challenged at one point as to whether Budget Day would be during March, he simply reassured MPs that ‘there is no risk of the Budget disappearing’.
