Electronic commerce will become one of the highest business growth areas for consultancies and logistics businesses over the next decade, according to Arthur D Little.
“There will only be two types of firms that will make a profitable business in building e-commerce online systems: firms that work in logistics and a handful of sytems and software providers,” said Werner Knetsch, global practice leader at Arthur D Little, speaking at the Business Online 98 conference in Amsterdam.
As firms try to increase their online business by attracting new customers and visitors to their sites, designing sites, advertising where they are on the Net so that they can get regular business, proving they are bona fide will become a priority.
“Customers on the Net want to know who they are dealing with. Once a handshake is no longer a handshake, clients are concerned that they could be dealing with a company called: rippoff.com,” Knetsch said.
Knetsch said businesses are not making e-commerce part of their business strategy. He warned them not to be complacent if they wanted to succeed and gain competitive advantage in the digital age. While firms have begun to look at how e-commerce can benefit their business, they have not understood the basics of retaining online customers or visitors.
