In a survey of more than 2000 jobs advertisements for finance directors over the last 25 years, it was found that FDs are far more strategy-orientated rather than just performing a traditional accounting function.
It also revealed that aspiring directors will require good interpersonal, IT and general management skills in the future.
In the mid-1970s, more than two-thirds of companies did not identify any personal attributes for their jobs, but by 1998, this had fallen to a mere 6%.
