Phillips joins from US energy group Amerada Hess, where he has served for the last 19 years, most recently as vice-president and director of its London-based operations.

‘In a smaller company like Regal, you set things up as you go along,’ Phillips told the FT. ‘After 19 years with Hess, in which I have seen it grow from a relatively little to a big company, I just felt that there was little for me to do.’
