Alessandro Bassi threw himself off a bridge near the company’s headquarters in northern Italy, according to police. Bassi had worked closely with Fausto Tonna, Parmalat’s former financial expert who has been accused of masterminding a series of frauds within the company.
Bassi had been questioned by police over the scandal but had not been cautioned as a suspect. The news of his death came at the same time as founder, Calisto Tanzi, was taken from prison to hospital. Tanzi complained of a tingling in his arm but still faced questioning from prosecutors in hospital, according to The Guardian.
