Where can a team of gay footballers manage to get a regular game without encountering abuse, ridicule and homophobia? Footballing accountants playing in North West England have provided the answer to that very dilemma. Thanks to the broad-minded bean counters of the Manchester Accountants League, Village Football Club has managed to get a regular match. The all-gay team from Manchester’s Gay Village area had found it hard to avoid homophobic abuse and ridicule, and rather than putting up with it, the team decided to look elsewhere to get its sporting kicks. Founder Graham Goggins explains: ‘We would have faced hostility in many local leagues and I wasn’t prepared to put the players through that. We’ve been welcomed very warmly by the league and by the vast majority of the teams and players we face.’ ?:
