British inventions have given a half-million pound boost to the economy under the Smart awards scheme according to a new survey by the DTI. Grants are awarded to SMEs to enable them to exploit and bring new ideas to market. Since its introduction in 1988 more than 3000 business have shared more than #300m in support form the scheme.
A new #2.7m campaign has been launched on national TV and print advertising aimed at encouraging UK’s 3.7m SMEs to contact their local Business Link office for advice. Minister for small businesses Nigel Griffiths said: ‘Small businesses are the lifeblood of the economy. They employ 12m people and annually contribute #1trillion to the UK economy. So it is crucial our businesses get the best advice.’
