In a keynote speech to the centre-left think tank the Institute of Public Policy Research Blair said of Tory policy: ‘In every area they have sums which don’t add up unless taxes rise or services for the great majority are cut even more than they currently indicate.
‘We will be under pressure to deliver higher expectations, but also under pressure on tax and spending.
‘The chancellor has already rightly signalled that the next spending round will be tough.’
Blair said the left wanted to deliver better services and ignore the tax and spending issue while the right wanted to claim this could only be delivered by massive tax increases.
He said continuing public service reform to get better value to money was ‘crucial’ to square the circle: ‘It is only by way of changing the system we will make it more effective.’
