New Customs chairman.

Former Schroders corporate finance expert Richard Broadbent has been named as the next chairman of Customs & Excise. Former managing director of corporate finance at the merchant bank, Broadbent, 46, will replace the outgoing chairman Dame Valerie Strachan on 1 February. The announcement follows a four-month search for a suitable candidate for the role, which requires the recommendation of Tony Blair and the chancellor Gordon Brown. Dame Strachan – who will retire on 9 January, the day before her 60th birthday – has been in the role since March 1993.
