EC backs British Donors

The EC is threatening to force the UK to grant tax breaks on UK donations to foreign EU charities

Currently, UK donations to UK charities benefit from generous Gift Aid rules,
which do not apply to cross-border EU donations.

Brussels’ Taxation Commissioner Lászl- Kovács said: ‘Gifts to bona fide
charities in other Member States should get the same tax treatment as gifts made
to domestic charities.’

Brussels has given the UK a final warning letter giving it two months to
explain how it will allow such deductions, or face a referral to the European
Court of Justice.
