Enron government witness resumes testimony

Enron government witness resumes testimony

Seventh day of testimony from former head of investor relations

Lawyers for former Enron CEOs Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling will again look to
attack the testimony of Mark Koenig, the former head of investor relations at
Enron, when he again takes the witness stand in Houston today.

It will be the seventh day of testimony from Koenig who is acting as a
government witness.

Koenig, who pleaded guilty in August 2004 to aiding and abetting securities
fraud and is facing up to ten years in prison and $1 million in fines, has
claimed that Skilling and Lay deceived investors and Wall Street analysts about
the true state of Enron’s financial health.

Lay and Skilling, who are being tried on roughly three dozen counts of
conspiracy and fraud, maintain they did nothing wrong.

The second government witness is expected to be Ken Rice, the former CEO of
Enron’s troubled Internet unit, Enron Broadband Services (EBS).

Rice pleaded guilty to a single count of securities fraud in 2004, and is
also facing a ten year jail term. He is expected to support Koenig’s testimony
that he knowingly misled investors about growth prospects for EBS with the
blessing of Enron’s senior management, CNN.com reported.
