Nationwide FD Graham Beale to serve as chief of combined Nationwide/Portman business

Nationwide finance director Graham Beale will step us as chief executive of a
newly-combined Nationwide and Portman Building society business from April 2007,
if the deal is completed.

Current Nationwide chief executive Philip Williamson and the chief executive
of Portman, Robert Sharpe, will continue in their current roles for the time
being, with the deal expected to bring strategic, operational and financial
benefits.

The amalgamated society, which expects clearance for the deal in September,
will have combined assets in excess of £150m.

A decision on who will audit the combined society has not yet been decided.
PricewaterhouseCoopers currently audits Nationwide, while KPMG audits Portman.
