CIMA opts for chartered accountant
CIMA today announced the appointment of member of an ICAEW member as its new chief executive.
Charles Tilley, a former KPMG partner, takes the top job at CIMA despite qualifying with a different institute.
But a CIMA spokesman said this was of no significance because Tilley was recruited for his experience, not his qualification.
The spokesman said: ‘We were looking for the best man to drive the business. At such a senior level it’s not just about qualifications.’
The spokesman said that the role of CIMA chief required business management skills and a wide business experience, both of which Tilley had built up during his career.
According to CIMA, Tilley’s experience covers a wide range of sectors including professional services. Prior to joining CIMA, he worked at Granville Baird, and Hambros, where he was group finance director.
The post, which is permanent, is that of a standard chief executive, leading the business and working with the council and staff.
Tilley said he spent a lot of time looking for the right kind of organisation he wanted to work for, ‘and that is one of gross capacity, quality people and a meaningful mission statement. CIMA is just such an organisation which is ready to build its brand and business.
‘I believe my business experience over the last thirty years will allow me to manage CIMA so as to provide members with the sustainable quality growth they desire.’
CIMA has been looking for a chief executive since the beginning of the year, when John Chester, who had been in the post for six years, took early retirement.
