Extra tax for ‘gas guzzlers’
Double tax rate expected for most polluting cars
Double tax rate expected for most polluting cars
UK taxpayers who drive the most polluting gas-guzzling cars will be hit with
a steep increase in road taxes.
According to
The
Times , Brown is planning on doubling the tax on these cars in a move
aimed at enhancing his green credentials before he takes over as prime minister.
Brown
is predicted to say that the current tax of £210 for the 225,000 least fuel
efficient cars purchased brand new since last April — including most 4x4s and
sports cars — will rise steadily, increasing to at least £400.
Environmental groups though have called for road tax to be raised to between
£1,000 to £2,000 for the worst-offending vehicles – in terms of carbon dioxide
emissions.
