Tenon fights Revenue over costs in Agassi case

Listed accountancy adviser Tenon has instructed barrister Patrick Way to pursue the Inland Revenue for costs the taxman refused to pay after losing to Andre Agassi in a recent landmark tax case.

The Court of Appeal ruling in favour of Agassi, which could cost the Revenue as much as £500m if other stars use the case law, was originally referred to Way through Bar Direct.

Bar Direct is a new scheme where accountants and other professionals are licensed to brief counsel directly without the need for a solicitor.

The Revenue refused to pay costs to Tenon on the premise that it was not a firm of solicitors, which experts say completely undermines the whole point of the new system.
