Revenue denies compensation story
The Inland Revenue has refuted weekend reports that Mapeley, the company at the heart of a hugely controversial PFI property deal, is preparing a £210m compensation claim against the government.

Reports in Sunday newspapers claim that Mapeley is just weeks away from submitting a claim. But a spokesman for the Revenue told Accountancy Age that there is no claim. ‘This £210m is not correct,’ he said. ‘The contract we signed up to, is the contract we signed up to.’
He confirmed that the government is in talks about future work with Mapeley. ‘The contract we signed up to isn’t being re-negotiated but we are talking to them about the terms under which they undertake new business. We are talking to them about the rates we pay for new business.’
The Revenue has signed a 20 year contract with Mapeley for the management if its property portfolio, which it claims will save the taxpayer ‘tens of millions of pounds a year’. Mapeley is understood to be disgruntled over certain aspects of the original contract. A spokesman said it could not comment due to the confidential nature of government contracts.
