Vijay and Biku Patel of prescription medicine supplier Waymade Healthcare have won Ernst & Young's Overall UK Entrepreneur of the Year award, at a ceremony in London on Monday evening.
The brothers, who arrived from Kenya in 1967 with Pounds 5 in their pockets, have built up Waymade into a major prescription medicine supplier which generated Pounds 200m worth of business last year.
David Wilkinson, national head of entrepreneurial services at E&Y said the Patels were an example of how to ‘build a global player out of very little’
He added: ‘They deserved the recognition of the judges as outstanding examples of UK entrepeneurship at its best.’
The Patels, who admitted to sacrificing their childhoods for business success, will now compete for the title of Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year in Monte Carlo in May next year.
Among the other winners were EasyJet chief Stelios Haji-Ioannou who won the young entrepreneur of the year award and Carphone Warehouse’s Charles Dunstone who walked off with the consumer services entrepreneur award.
