Royal Dutch Shell reveals profits a third up on last year

Royal Dutch Shell has announced record profits for a UK-listed company of
£13.12bn ($22.94bn).

The figure is a third higher than last year when the company also set a UK
record.

Rises in the cost of crude oil have been a big factor in the results, as the
price of a barrel has increased from $45 to $70.

A large proportion of Shell’s profits come from extracting oil and selling it
on to the markets. Only a relatively small amount comes from sales of petrol on
garage forecourts.

Earlier this week American oil giant Exxon Mobil announced the highest annual
profit figure in corporate history at $33.86bn.
