Premiership the richest league in Europe

Deloitte & Touche today (Thursday) released its much anticipated annual review of football finances, showing the English Premiership to be the financial champions of Europe with income totalling £1,26bn.

Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the plight of many lower league teams, the top league in England reported an 18% rise in income on the previous year, with broadcasting the largest single element, contributing 39% of the total figure.

Meanwhile, the English Premiership was also the most profitable at operating level out of the five big leagues – Spain, Italy, Germany and France – with a total £86m (134m euros).

Deloitte head of sport, Gerry Boon, said: ‘The English Premiership is the undoubted financial champions of Europe – generating the highest income and making the highest operating profits.-
