MPs disagree with beer tax proposal

Almost 60% of MPs disagree with chancellor Alistair Darling’s plan to raise
taxes on beer in Wednesday’s budget, according to a poll.

202 MPs (59%) have signed a Parliamentary motion in support of the campaign
to axe the beer tax altogether after 25,000 members of the public emailed their
local MP.

Brewers and publicans claim there is no case for a tax on beer that increases
every year given that the industry has suffered one of its worst years to date.
